“I had COVID,” the GMA-7 actress tells SmartParenting.com.ph in an exclusive interview. “I battled COVID when I was two months postpartum. Avianna turned two months old.”
On March 15, 2021, Sophie gave birth to Avianna Celeste (read more). Her first child is with Vin Abrenica, her fiance. Before moving into their own home, the young family lived with their new mom.
Smart Parenting interviewed her about how her family was affected by the contagious disease in an exclusive interview.
“Our family driver contracted COVID from our son when he picked him up at the airport.” She shared that even though we quarantined our driver at the airport, he was sent to a quarantine facility for 2 weeks. He tested negative.
Sophie’s family allowed him to return to their home, but he then lost his voice. They didn’t suspect that it was COVID-19, but he had tested negative.
Their house cook, however, had a fever and was tested positive for the virus.
Sophie shared that they tested positive, and then everyone in my mom’s household was tested. Everyone except one of our households was positive.”
According to the celebrity mom, her world was turned upside down after her father became ill, who is also a positive test for HIV.
“My father was the only one who took it seriously. Long COVID, which is COVID that lasts several months, was what he had. We really believed that he would get out of hospital after he spent almost two months in the hospital.
It wasn’t looking good. After a few sessions of hemoperfusion, he was able to get better. He’s now back home, which is a miracle, and we are so happy and thankful,” she shared.
Sophie was also advised by her doctors not to worry about Avianna, as babies aren’t affected by COVID-19.
She says that she knew it was true, referring to the infectious disease caused in part by a coronavirus. This virus then led to a worldwide health crisis. “But, if it wasn’t for me, I wouldn’t take it as seriously now as I do.”
“True enough, my symptoms were kasi. Avianna naman, she lost her voice and got paos. She didn’t have a fever. She had nothing. She said that she didn’t have anything, so I was watching and monitoring her closely.”
The entire family stayed in one house, where they were all quarantined together.
“The best thing about it was that we could not only be in our rooms because we all had it. We were able to take care of Avianna pa. Rin. Sophie explained that we could do the same routines without having to see other people or doing anything else.”
Sophie was most worried about her parents, who are seniors.
COVID can also be a very mental battle. COVID is not only a physical struggle, but it also takes a lot of mental tolls.
“Mentally,” Sophie said.

Sophie claims that her doctor assured her that babies are more likely to resist the virus. However, it was not confirmed that the Delta variant, which is the most contagious strain to infants, had local transmission at the time.
The first-time mom said that Avianna lost her voice like she had passed. “She didn’t have a fever, and she didn’t have any, so I was very closely watching her and monitoring her.”
Sophie reflects back and says, “Actually, COVID is also a massive mental battle.” It’s more than a physical battle; it also takes a lot of mental tolls. That was the hardest part.
